Sunshine 5000 Ski Mountaineering Competition
Sunshine Village is proud to host the Sunshine 5000 - Ski Mountaineering Competition in conjunction with the Alpine Club of Canada; the only mountaineering competition in Alberta!
Ski mountaineering (or randonnee racing) is a winter sport that combines athletic skiing and mountaineering skills over medium distances, incorporating technical ascents and descents. Athletes employ skins with alpine touring, telemark, or split-board gear to gain elevation and then descend typical ski slopes.
The mountaineering event will feature two categories consisting of males and females over two courses, consisting of an introductory course and a race course for advanced mountaineers. The starting area of the race will begin for both divisions at 9 a.m. in front of the Day Lodge in the village. All racers are expected to cross the finish line in front of the Day Lodge by 12:30 p.m.
Registration for the 2010 Sunshine 5000 Ski Mountaineering Competition is done through the Alpine Club of Canada Website. There will be a pre-race technical meeting at the Alpine Club of Canada in Canmore at 6:30pm on Friday, Feb 5th.
